The portrait

Your chart in brief

You were born with the Sun in Aries, the Moon in Capricorn and Aries rising. The Sun is the self you are becoming; the Moon is what you need to feel at home; the Ascendant is the face and the manner the world meets first.

Fire is the strongest element in the chart and cardinal the leading mode. The chart ruler, the planet of the rising sign, is Mars, in Aquarius 29°22′, 12th house: it steers the whole chart. There is a concentration of planets in Capricorn.

A fire Sun with an earth Moon: you want adventure and need security. Your spirit leaps, your heart wants solid ground, and at your best you turn bold ideas into real results.

The tightest aspect, the strongest conversation between two planets, is Jupiter in trine with the Midheaven: success and recognition. The pages that follow read each part in turn.

Your question

What the chart says about love

You asked above all about love. These are the parts of the reading that speak most directly to it, gathered in one place; the chapters that follow fill in the rest.

In love you are passionate, honest and in pursuit; you need a partner who enjoys the chase and stands up to you.

Venus is exalted here: you love romantically, compassionately and without conditions. You are attracted to sensitivity, artistry and soul, and you show love through devotion and imagination. Your love is a gift; the work is seeing the person clearly, not only the dream.

Mars in Aquarius pursues as a friend first: unconventional, curious and independent. Desire stays alive with mental connection, surprise and plenty of space.

The signs that meet your chart most easily are Sagittarius, Taurus, Aquarius; the full ranking is in the chapter on compatibility.

☉ Sun · Aries 6°51′, 12th house

The Sun in Aries

Aries, from Urania's Mirror (1824)

The Sun is the centre of the self: your identity, your will and the purpose you are here to live.

With the Sun in Aries you were born at the start of the zodiac, when spring breaks open, and you carry its force. You are a beginner by nature: brave, direct, competitive and alive in the moment of action. You would rather try and fail than wait, and you have an honesty that others find refreshing or alarming. Mars, your ruler, gives you a warrior's courage and a quick temper that cools as fast as it flares. Your life asks you to lead, to pioneer and to protect, and to learn that patience is also a form of strength.

In the twelfth house, the house of the unconscious, solitude and spirit: Your light works behind the scenes; solitude, spirituality and service to the unseen sustain you.

The shadow to watch

Impatience, impulsiveness and a temper that burns bridges.

Life purpose

Your purpose is to begin. You are at your most alive when something needs a first step that nobody else will take: a venture, a rescue, a stand on principle. Meaning comes from action, not from waiting for permission, and from the people who find the courage to move because they saw you move first.

As a friend

As a friend you are loyal, protective and fun, the one who suggests the adventure and defends a friend in trouble without being asked. You are honest to a fault and rarely hold a grudge. You need friends who can take your directness and who do not mistake your speed for carelessness.

Money and resources

With money you are bold and quick: you earn by taking initiative and can spend as fast as you earn. You do well when you work for yourself or are paid for results. A simple rule, such as saving before spending, protects you from impulse and lets your courage build something that lasts.

Body and vitality

Aries rules the head, and your energy lives close to the surface. You need physical exertion to stay calm: sport, running, anything that burns off heat. Headaches, fevers and small accidents tend to come when you rush or bottle up anger. Rest is not weakness for you; it is how the fire is kept.

The way to grow

Your growth lies in patience and in finishing. The second half of any project, when the excitement fades, is where your character is built. Learning to listen before you answer, and to let others lead sometimes, turns a brave beginner into a leader people follow for years.

☽ Moon · Capricorn 19°40′, 10th house

The Moon in Capricorn

The Moon is the inner life: feelings, needs, instincts and what makes you feel at home.

With the Moon in Capricorn your emotions are controlled and private. You need structure, achievement and respect to feel safe, and you may have learned early to take care of yourself. You show love through loyalty and responsibility.

In the tenth house: Your emotional life is visible in your career; you may work with the public or with care.

Born under the Last Quarter Moon

Born at the last quarter, you are a reformer: you question old beliefs and reorient your life around your own values.

Family and home

In the family you are the responsible one, often grown up early and relied upon. You show love through duty and support. You need respect and structure at home, and the lesson is to let others look after you, and to show the tenderness you feel.

When you are upset

When you are upset, you work: you deal with the problem and keep your feelings private. Solving something practical calms you. You feel better with time alone, a sense of control and someone steady who does not ask you to fall apart.

AC · Aries 11°44′

Aries rising

The Ascendant is the degree of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It is the doorway of the chart: your body, your manner, the way you begin.

With Aries rising you meet the world head first. People see someone energetic, direct and confident, often younger than their years, ready to start. You enter rooms quickly and make decisions fast. The lesson of the Aries Ascendant is to finish what you begin and to let others keep up.

The birth time comes from a certificate or record, so the rising sign and houses can be read with confidence.

First impressions

First impressions of you are strong: people notice your energy before your words. You can seem impatient or competitive at first, and you are often the first to speak, act or volunteer. You rarely need warming up, and new situations wake you up rather than frighten you.

Style and appearance

Your style is sporty, practical and quick, with a fondness for red and for clothes you can move in. Your face often has a determined look, and you walk fast. You may carry small scars from adventures; the body of an Aries rising is built for action.

The chart ruler: Mars

Aries is ruled by Mars, which makes it the ruler of the whole chart. It sits in Aquarius 29°22′, 12th house, so the the unconscious, solitude and spirit are where your life is steered from. Mars is drive: how you act, desire, compete and fight.

MC · Capricorn 6°29′

The Midheaven in Capricorn

The Midheaven is the highest point of the chart: calling, career and reputation, the way the world comes to know you. With Capricorn at the top of the chart, at work you thrive in management, business, government, architecture, finance and anything with a ladder to climb.

You are known for authority and achievement. Your reputation grows steadily with age, through responsibility, discipline and results.

☿︎ Mercury · Aries 5°37′, 12th house, retrograde

Mercury in Aries thinks fast and speaks first: direct, decisive and quick to argue, with a talent for new ideas and little patience for long explanations.

In the twelfth house, the house of the unconscious, solitude and spirit: Your thinking is intuitive and private; you understand more than you say.

Mercury was retrograde when you were born: your mind works in its own original way, reflective and thorough, and you think twice before you speak.

♀︎ Venus · Pisces 16°23′, 12th house

Venus in Pisces

Venus is love and value: how you love, what you find beautiful and what you attract.

In the twelfth house, the house of the unconscious, solitude and spirit: Your energy works behind the scenes; hidden anger needs a healthy outlet.

♃︎ Jupiter · Virgo 6°24′, 6th house, retrograde

Jupiter in Virgo

Jupiter is growth: where you find luck, faith and abundance.

Jupiter in Virgo grows through service and skill: success comes from careful work and helping others.

Your faith is in useful work: you believe that service and skill bring their own reward. Opportunity comes through health, craft, analysis and helping others. The risk is worrying over details; the blessing is real, practical wisdom.

In the sixth house, the house of work, health and daily life: Good fortune through work and service; good recuperative powers.

Jupiter was retrograde when you were born: your faith and growth are inner and personal, and luck often comes the second time around.

♄︎ Saturn · Aquarius 15°30′, 11th house

Saturn in Aquarius

Saturn is the teacher: where you meet limits, take responsibility and build mastery over time.

Saturn in Aquarius is at home in the old tradition: it teaches principled independence and service to the group.

Saturn is at home here too: your test is belonging. You may have felt an outsider, and you learn to serve a group while staying yourself. With time you become an architect of communities and ideas.

In the eleventh house, the house of friends, groups and hopes: Few but loyal friends; responsibility in groups.

The outer planets

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto

The outer planets move slowly and are shared by everyone born within several years; their signs describe a generation. Their houses and aspects make them personal.

♅︎ Uranus in Capricorn 17°44′, 10th house. Uranus in Capricorn marks a generation that restructures institutions and authority. An unusual or changing career; you break the mould in public life.

♆︎ Neptune in Capricorn 18°47′, 10th house. Neptune in Capricorn marks a generation that dissolves old structures and dreams of new ones. An inspired or artistic career, or one hard to define.

♇︎ Pluto in Scorpio 22°40′, 8th house, retrograde. Pluto in Scorpio marks a generation of intensity that confronts taboos and the shadow. Pluto is at home here: great power of regeneration and depth.

Venus, Mars and the seventh house

Love and partnership

In love you are passionate, honest and in pursuit; you need a partner who enjoys the chase and stands up to you. Venus in Pisces shows how you love and what you find beautiful; Mars in Aquarius shows how you desire and pursue. Mars in Aquarius pursues as a friend first: unconventional, curious and independent. Desire stays alive with mental connection, surprise and plenty of space.

You are single now, so read this as a portrait of what you are looking for and of what you attract. Notice where the chart describes people you keep meeting: the pattern is the message.

The seventh house, the house of partners, begins in Libra: the qualities of Libra are what you seek in a partner, and often what a partner brings out. Libra brings charm, fairness and romance. They are made for partnership, and they need harmony, beauty and a partner who makes decisions with them.

Venus sextile Uranus: excitement, freedom and surprises in love, in cooperation: an opportunity that rewards effort.

Venus sextile Neptune: romantic idealism and artistic gifts, in cooperation: an opportunity that rewards effort.

the Moon sextile Venus: your tenderness and charm, in cooperation: an opportunity that rewards effort.

♈︎ Aries and the zodiac

Compatibility with the other signs

Every sign meets every other in its own way. This ranking starts from the classic rule of sign distance, how far apart two signs sit in the zodiac, and weighs it for your whole chart: the Sun counts most, then the Moon, which shows who feels like home, and Venus, which shows who you are drawn to. Libra on the Descendant, the cusp of partners, adds a little weight to that sign. It describes Sun signs; a full comparison of two charts goes further.

With Venus in Pisces you are drawn to gentle, artistic, soulful people, often water and earth signs, who understand you without words.

Your Moon in Capricorn feels at home with dependable, mature people who respect your boundaries and stay through hard times.

The aspects

How the planets speak to each other

Aspects are the angles between planets. They show which parts of the self work together easily and which rub against each other, and the tightest are the loudest. The strongest in this chart:

  • ♃︎ Jupiter △ the Midheaven MC (trine, orb 0.1°): success and recognition, in harmony: a natural gift that flows easily.
  • ☉︎ the Sun ⚻ Jupiter ♃︎ (quincunx, orb 0.4°): your confidence, luck and generosity, out of step: two needs that must keep adjusting to each other.

Living with the strongest aspects

Jupiter–Midheaven (trine). Trines are gifts that come easily, and that is their risk: what costs nothing can be taken for granted. Use this one deliberately, and it becomes one of the great strengths of your life.

Sun–Jupiter, Mercury–Jupiter (quincunxes). Quincunxes ask for constant small adjustments between two needs that do not understand each other. Patience, humour and attention to health and routine help you hold them together.

Sun–Midheaven, Mercury–Midheaven (squares). Squares are the motors of a chart. The friction will push you to act, again and again, until you build something from it. Many of your greatest achievements are likely to come from this tension.

Moon–Neptune, Uranus–Neptune, Sun–Mercury (conjunctions). Because the two are fused, you rarely experience one without the other. It is a concentration of power: learn to direct it consciously, because it shapes your character whether you choose it or not.

The shape of the chart

Patterns, dignities and hemispheres

Sun in Aries is exalted: honoured, at its best and most refined.

Moon in Capricorn is in detriment, in the sign opposite its home: it must work harder and in unusual ways, often becoming a source of hard-won strength.

Venus in Pisces is exalted: honoured, at its best and most refined.

Jupiter in Virgo is in detriment, in the sign opposite its home: it must work harder and in unusual ways, often becoming a source of hard-won strength.

Saturn in Aquarius is at home, in a sign it rules: its energy flows freely and strongly.

Most planets are above the horizon: a life lived in the open, oriented towards the world, career and others. Most planets are on the eastern side: a self-made life, driven by your own initiative.

The twelve houses

Every area of life

Fire is strong in your chart: you are enthusiastic, spontaneous, courageous and warm, a natural inspirer who needs action and meaning.

In daily life your fire needs a goal and an audience: work with a challenge in it, regular exercise and people who share your enthusiasm. When you feel flat, move, create or start something small.

Water is quiet in your chart: you may keep feelings at a distance, and you gain from art, music and close bonds that open the heart. To bring in more water: listen to music, keep a journal, spend time by water and let the people you love closer.

Cardinal signs lead your chart: you are an initiator who starts things and moves them forward.

3 planets gather in Capricorn: a stellium, a concentration of energy that makes the qualities of Capricorn a dominant theme of your life, whatever your Sun sign.

☊ The North Node · ⚸ Lilith · ⊗ Fortune

Destiny, the wild self and luck

The North Node in Capricorn, 9th house. The North Node in Capricorn asks you to grow towards responsibility and achievement, away from dependence (the South Node in Cancer). The South Node in Cancer is the familiar gift of care and belonging; leaning on it too much keeps you dependent. Your growth lies in your own ambition. Its house points to travel, belief and higher learning as the direction of growth.

Black Moon Lilith in Aquarius. Lilith in Aquarius holds the outsider, the radical and the one who will not conform.

The Part of Fortune in Capricorn, 10th house. Calculated from the Ascendant, Sun and Moon, it marks where joy and good fortune come most naturally: through career, status and calling.

The cycles of a life

The great turning points

Some cycles of the sky are shared by everyone at about the same age. They mark the chapters of a life; the years below are approximate, from your year of birth.

  • Around 2004, age 12: The first Jupiter return (behind you). Jupiter comes back to its place at birth for the first time: a widening of the world at the edge of adolescence, the first sense of what you believe and what you might become.
  • Around 2013, age 21: The Saturn square (behind you). Saturn reaches a square to its birth position: the threshold of adult life, when the first real commitments and responsibilities are chosen or forced.
  • Around 2016, age 24: The second Jupiter return (behind you). A new cycle of growth in early adulthood: studies end, travel or work open the world, and a direction of your own begins to show.
  • Around 2021, age 29: The Saturn return (behind you). Saturn returns to its place at birth. What is not truly yours falls away, and what you build from here is built on your own authority. Many people change work, relationship or home around this age.
  • Around 2028, age 36: The third Jupiter return. A second wave of expansion in mid-life: confidence, wider influence and the chance to grow the life you chose at the Saturn return.
  • Around 2033, age 41: The Uranus opposition. Uranus reaches the point opposite its place at birth: the classic mid-life awakening. The urge for freedom and authenticity returns, and parts of your life that feel too small are shaken loose.
  • Around 2042, age 50: The Chiron return. Chiron, the wounded healer, returns to its birth place: old wounds surface to be healed, and what you have suffered becomes wisdom you can offer others.
  • Around 2051, age 59: The second Saturn return. Saturn returns again: a reckoning with legacy and elderhood. You decide what to keep building, what to hand on and how you want to spend the years ahead.
  • Around 2076, age 84: The Uranus return. Uranus completes its circle of the zodiac. A full cycle of awakening is complete, and with it comes a late, liberating freedom to be wholly yourself.

The year ahead

Transits, returns and progressions

As the planets move on, they form new aspects to the positions of birth. These are the slow-moving transits of the coming twelve months, the ones that shape a year.

Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign. Where it touches your chart it tests, structures and matures; its lessons are demanding, and its rewards last.

Pluto spends decades in each sign. Its contacts are rare and deep: endings, rebirth and a fundamental change of power that unfolds over years.

Neptune spends about fourteen years in each sign. Its contacts dissolve and inspire: a time for imagination, compassion and spiritual growth, and for checking the facts twice.

Uranus spends about seven years in each sign. Its contacts bring awakening, surprise and the urge for freedom, often suddenly; what is too tight breaks open.

Jupiter spends about a year in each sign. Where it touches your chart, it brings growth, generosity, protection and opportunity, and sometimes too much of a good thing.

Returns

The Saturn return, when Saturn comes back to where it stood at your birth, around the ages of 29, 58 and 87, is one of the great turning points of a life: a reckoning with adulthood, responsibility and what you have built. Your next Saturn return is exact around 8 Mar 2051.

Every twelve years Jupiter returns to its place at your birth, opening a new cycle of growth and opportunity. Your next Jupiter return falls around 25 Aug 2027.

Progressions

In secondary progressions, each day after birth stands for a year of life. At 34, your progressed Sun is in Taurus and your progressed Moon in Aries: an emotional season of courage, action and new starts. In about 1 months the progressed Moon moves into Taurus.

The chart as a whole

A chart is not a fate but a map of tendencies, and each part of it can be lived at its best or its worst. Gathered together, this is the shape of Sofia's chart:

The great gifts: the Aries Sun's courage, action and new starts, a Moon in Capricorn that brings ambition, duty and achievement, and fire as the strongest element. The sign that meets your chart most easily is Sagittarius; the one that asks most is Virgo.

The great work: impatience, impulsiveness and a temper that burns bridges, and learning what water, the quietest element, has to teach.

Return to this reading at the turning points of life: the returns, the birthdays and the hard years. Different parts of it will speak at different times.

How this chart was made

Planetary positions from Astronomy Engine (Don Cross, MIT licence), geocentric and apparent, in the tropical zodiac on the true ecliptic of date; the birth time is converted to universal time with the historical time-zone rules for Lisbon, Portugal. Houses by Placidus, or whole signs where Placidus is undefined; mean lunar node and mean Black Moon Lilith. Sign plates from Urania's Mirror, engraved by Sidney Hall (London, 1824, public domain). Interpretations are written for reflection and entertainment.
